Pitaya is a long-day plant. Its flower bud differentiation is primarily influenced by light and temperature, with the optimal growth temperature ranging from 25 to 35°C. It requires over 12 hours of light per day. Under natural conditions, insufficient daylight hours can cause dragon fruit plants to enter a “dormant” state where flowering becomes difficult.
The principle of dragon fruit Growlights is to use LED lights to simulate sunlight, achieving the required light duration and intensity for Pitaya growth. This breaks the plant’s natural photoperiod rhythm, allowing for earlier flowering or an extended flowering period.
When applying supplemental lighting for Pitaya, the following key points require attention:
Fixture Selection: Plant-specific supplemental LED lights are recommended. Choose lights with a power rating of 12-15W and a peak wavelength between 630-660 nanometers.
Lighting Schedule:
Lighting generally begins in early March each year.
For row planting systems: Install one Growlights per row, spaced 1.5-1.8 meters apart.
For single-post planting systems: Install one Growlights per 4-4.5 square meters.
Position the light 1-1.3 meters away from the middle section of 80% of the fruiting branches.
Use the extended daylight method (illumination from 18:00 to 24:00).
Daily Growlights duration should be 4-6 hours.
Light Intensity: The illuminance at the middle and lower parts of the fruiting branches should be >200 lx, and should not fall below 100 lx.
Temperature Conditions: To induce flowering, maintain a daytime temperature >25°C and a nighttime temperature >20°C.
